About

What is ASHWAGANDHA
and why it might be a good fit for you.

Ashwagandha is a very popular herbal root plant that has been used in Ayurveda Medicine for over 3000 years and is supported by over 30 studies with millions of users.

Ashwagandha is mostly used to naturally reduce stress and anxiety ( 1 ) but it may also modestly enhance strength performance, improve glucose metabolism, and increase testosterone levels and more…..

Ashwagandha is now one of the best selling supplements in the world but purchase with caution because many Ashwagandha supplements may not be effective.

Common Questions

Does Ashwagandha Work?

Yes and No – Based on the information and all the clinical studies shown below the short answer is yes. However, the active ingredient in Ashwagandha is called Withanolides and unfortunately many Ashwagandha supplements have low amounts of Withanolides. We found some good Ashwagandha supplements with high amounts of Withanolides and we found others with very lows amounts.

There were also some poorly manufactured and tested products so if you want the best Ashwagandha supplement you should be careful which one you buy.

How Long Does It Take For Ashwagandha To Work?

Individuals may experience different results and different time but it has been said that Ashwagandha should begin to impact the body beneficially within two weeks. The quality of the Ashwagandha supplement will also make a difference because supplements with more active ingredients will likely show results faster.

When Should I Take Ashwagandha?

Many studies used ashwagandha in the morning in a smaller dose and then again in the evening in a larger dose. Since ashwagandha is calming and can improve sleep it may not be best to take to much in the morning. However if Ashwagandha is being used for anxiety small amounts during the day may be best.

Is It Safe To take Ashwagandha Daily?

Ashwagandha is generally considered a safe supplement for most people to use daily, however its long-term effects are unknown.

Can I take ashwagandha on empty stomach?

Ashwagandha can be taken on an empty stomach but if you experience discomfort when taking it on an empty stomach you should consider taking it with a small meal instead.

Will Ashwagandha Help Me Loose Weight?

It is unclear why and it may have something to do with the antioxidants in Ashwagandha but one study showed a significant reduction in body weight and body mass index in patients that were treated with Ashwagandha root extract compared to placebo.

Will Ashwagandha Give Me More Energy?

In some studies and in some individuals Ashwagandha has been shown to increase energy and improve concentration, but in other individuals Ashwagandha might cause sleepiness and drowsiness.

How Much Ashwagandha Should I Take?

The amount of Ashwagandha you need to take depends on the percentage of active ingredients called Withanolides. Different Ashwagandha supplements have different amounts of Withanolides. We suggest to use the same amount that is used in human clinical studies which is about 10mg to 30mg of withanolides per day.

Before You Buy Ashwagandha

Don’t Buy another

Ashwagandha supplement until you know the FACTS

Many Ashwagandha supplements are inferior and many review websites can’t be trusted!

What You Need To Know

  • ConsumerLabs.com reports only 56% of the Ashwagandha products tested passed their tests and some of the failed products were recommended by other review websites.
  • 80% of Ashwagandha products DID NOT meet our strict requirements.
  • Many companies don’t disclose the percent of Withanolides which could be less than 0.5%.
  • Many supplements did not meet the minimum amounts of active ingredients used in clinical studies.

Ashwagandha Buying Tips

If you want to find and buy the best Ashwagandha supplement available you have two options. Use these tips to help you compare hundreds of products, or just buy the products we recommend below because we have already compared over 100 of the best sellers and most recommended products for you.

  • It’s important to know that much of the health benefits from Ashwagandha come from the root and the most active compounds are called “Withanolides”.
  • A daily dose should provide at least 7mg of Withanolides but most studies used versions of Ashwagandha that had between 10 mg and 30 mg of Withanolides which we think may be the best doses for maximum benefits.
  • It’s not how much ashwagandha per serving, it’s how much active ingredient is in the serving.
  • We found many highly rated Ashwagandha products that had very low Withanolides – Look for products with high Withanolides.
  • There is a lot of marketing hype and misleading labels and we believe over 80% percent of consumers are buying inferior Ashwagandha supplements.
  • We do not recommend buying any ashwagandha supplement without knowing the percent of withanolides first.
  • Consumer feedback indicates that very high dosages can lead to more side effects for some people so be cautious with some very high potency products.
  • Our consolidated reviews shows you can’t trust most review websites if you actually want the best Ashwagandha supplement.
  • To ensure quality, only buy products that are  cGMP and 3rd party tested.
  • A 5 star rating is no guaranty you’re getting a safe or authentic product. Many best sellers and 5 star rated products have very low Withanolides.
  • Review our comparison charts which show you the facts and the truth about the top sellers and the top recommended Ashwagandha supplements – See Below.

What about KSM-66 Ashwagandha products

There has been a lot of talk about KSM-66 ashwagandha supplements.

KMS-66 is a patented processing method that claims to have a standardized Ashwagandha with 5% Withanolides and that is a good thing.

However, Consumerlab.com’s Official Validated USP tests showed lower levels of Withanolides than what was claimed on the label of some of the KSM-66 products they tested. Because of this they listed those products as “uncertain” and where not approved until other testing methods that are recommended by the manufacturer of KSM-66 can be explored.

Our Research on KSM-66

Our research showed that some of the scientific studies that showed positive results actually used the KSM-66 Ashwagandha which shows that KSM-66 can be effective.

Studies Using KSM-66

Ixoreal is the company that makes KSM-66 Ashwagandha and they claim ” KSM-66 has been evaluated in 22 “Gold Standard” human clinical trials“. Because KMS-66 is made in India in a non-FDA cGMP facility, to be safe and sure of the products we recommend we have chosen to not include KSM-66 products unless there is a confirmed independent 3rd party testing certificate that shows the Withanolides percentage of the finished product.

Is KSM-66 Better

Unless we compared every KSM-66 product and compared it to our current best ashwagandha supplement it’s unclear if a KSM-66 supplement would be better or not and it would depend on how much Withanolides are in that product and how much it would cost. We did look and some KSM-66 products and even with 5% Withanolides in some KSM-66 products many that still had less Withanolides than our top picks. I also found KSM-66 product to be more expensive in general.

Note: On their website Ixoreal states ” Ixoreal stringently follows WHO and US-FDA guidelines on GMP“. Following guidelines does not mean they are actually regulated by the FDA or in an actual FDA certified cGMP facilty. See why this matters – HERE

Recommended KSM 66 Product

Features:

  • 1500mg of Withanolides per bottle
  • $1.13 per 100mg of Withanolides
  • 25mg of Withanolides per capsule
  • GMP and 3rd Party Tested
  • 7.5mg Black pepper extract per capsule

If you do want to try a KSM 66 product we recommend this brand because they are GMP and 3rd Party Tested.

Comparison Chart Notes and Disclaimers.

Note: We reviewed over 100 of the best and most recommended Ashwagandha supplements but Amazon.com says there are over 3000 results for the word “Ashwagandha” so we’re sure we missed many.

We felt many of the 100+ products that we reviewed were inferior in some way and most were not worth including on our chart.

Our comparison chart is comprised primarily of products from known companies, products considered top sellers from multiple websites, products that were listed as “Amazon’s recommended” product, or “Amazon Choice” products, and we included most of the top 3 products recommended by 18 other review websites.

SURPRISING RESULTS

We were surprised to see how all the best reviewed products compared to our top choice.

5 websites chose Organic India Ashwagandha which has approximately 875mg of withanolides per bottle while our top choice had 2340mg per bottle. Organic India also costs $6.98 per 100mg of withanolides compared to .49 cents per 100mg of ashwagandha. Why would companies recommend a product so low in Withanolides? See Why HERE . . . .

We were also very surprised to see how Amazons “Best Seller” compared to our top choice. What surprised us the most was that there is no indication of the amount of Withanolides per serving so it could be as low as .5mg, but this is their best selling Ashwagandha at the time of this publication. It shows that people have no clue what is good and bad!  We would never recommend a product without knowing how much active ingredient is actually in it!

Amazon’s “Best Seller” receives many great reviews despite nothing in print about how much active ingredient is in the product which could be VERY LITTLE. This is why we always say NEVER RELY ON CONSUMER REVIEWS – see why HERE . . . .

Omitted Ashwagandha products

Many products were left off this chart for the following reasons:

  • No indication of the percent of withanolides on the label or website.
  • Withanolides so low there was no comparison.
  • Companies that we could not find information on to verify if they are reputable company or not.
  • Companies that would not reply to our email or phone questions.
  • Companies reported to have bad customer service.
  • Companies we felt we could not trust.
  • Companies outside USA and Canada.
  • Companies that do not use GMP or 3rd party testing
  • We omitted most KSM-66 Ashwagandha supplements and other unique water-based extract versions from the main comparisons until further testing and accurate data becomes available.

What are the side effects of Ashwagandha?

When it comes to Ashwagandha, a higher dose and more active ingredient is not necessarily better.

Clinical Side Effects: Most human clinical studies show very few adverse side effects for short term use with doses under 30mg of Withanolides, Some clinical reports and about 5% of user feedback has reported mild to moderate side effects especially with higher doses.

Most Common Side Effects: nausea, stomach aches/cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, lightheaded, dizziness, increased blood pressure, low blood pressure, heart palpitations, insomnia, lack of focus, nightmares, increased anxiety, headache, migraines, skin rash, allergic reaction, irritability and anger.

Do Not Use If : You have: night shade allergies, low blood pressure, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, heart issues, stomach ulcer, auto-immune disease or if you are pregnant or on blood thinners.

Our Recommendations: Start with a lower dose to see how you react to this supplement and increase the dose to the manufactures daily recommendations if needed. Stop using immediately if you experience any adverse effects and consult a physician.

Consolidated Reviews

We compared the number 1 choice
from 18 other review websites

Our research and years of experience leads us to believe that most review websites are biased, affiliated with their top choice, only recommend the products with the biggest commission, or are just WRONG! Find Out Why?

Of the 18 websites reviewing Ashwagandha how is it possibly that there were 8 different # 1 best products. These websites confuse consumers that are trying to find the best ashwagandha supplement for them.

See why we believe ours rated best!

COMPARISON OVERVIEW

  • 7 websites recommended a #1 pick that was not manufactured in a cGMP facility.
  • 7 websites recommended a #1 product that was not Made in USA.
  • 7 websites recommended a #1 product that had no proof or indication of being 3rd party tested. – See why that matters HERE . . . .
  • 10 websites recommended a #1 product that did not indicate the percent of Withanolides.
  • 14 websites  recommended a #1 product that had lower Withanolides than our top choice or recommended a product with no idea of the percent of Withanolides.
  • 5 websites recommended a #1 product that cost over $7.00 per 100mg of Withanolides compared to our top choice at $0.76 cents per 100mg of withanolides.
  • 1 review website recommended their own product.
  • 14 websites recommended a #1 product that cost more per 100mg of Withanolides and 1 other was only found in UK dollars.
  • 2 websites recommended products from unknown companies with almost zero customer feedback and zero reputation.
  • 2 websites recommended a product that sells for $30.00 for 60 caps when almost all others sell for an average of $13 to $15 for 90 to 120 caps.
  • 2 products had consumer reports issues complaining of quality issues.
  • 2 websites had recommended products from manufactures that would not return our email inquiries and had reports of poor customer service.
  • 2 websites had a #2 recommended product that failed consumer labs.com tests and cost over 7 dollars more for 100mg of withanolides.
  • Only 1 supplement had more withanolides per 100mg but is not made in the USA and is not made in cGMP facility so label accuracy can not be trusted.

Conclusion: Did 15 of 18 review websites get it wrong?

None of the 18 websites had a better top choice product that met or exceeded all our strict standards or had a product that was cheaper per 100mg of active ingredient. Many of these trusted review websites recommended products not made in GMP facilities, or products with no 3rd party testing and they recommended products with very little  active compounds. – See why that matters HERE . . . .

Based on our research we would not trust 15 out of 18 of those review websites when buying an Ashwagandha product!
